Artist’s Statement paint for the sheer emotional and physical intensity of painting. There is a passion, a connection that develops between the canvas and me that seems to be a dialogue with my own sensitivities and feelings. It’s as if I’m speaking to myself in a mirror, and my reflection can reply with its own thoughts.

It’s the act of painting that makes it all worthwhile, the excitement that comes from searching for and finding jus that right shape or color that makes a painting come together. It’s a profoundly emotional experience, and it’s the sole reason for standing there naked with your brush in hand.

I get involved in a painting in a total emotional, physical, and intellectual way. The tactile feel of a the paint and canvas, the scale of the image, the emotional content of the color, it all works to create a total sensory experience that focuses all my faculties to their highest levels.

My work involves a reinterpretation of traditional themes of still life, figure and landscape painting. I try to express the power and elegance of simple forms and everyday shapes,; to enhance rather than to depict; to create a subtle drama on canvas that reaches for an emotional level through the use of contrast, of color, texture shape and rhythm.
