Artist Statement:

Taking pleasure in the process of creating art is as important as the outcome of the work. The sense of excitement and energy, which comes from exploring new artistic terrain, is unmistakably present in my pastels on paper.

I began doing the pastels mainly to please myself, but I've discovered that if you have fun with your work, that joy translates to others. I especially like the spontaneity involved in creating these pieces.

My pastels reveal a fluid style in which color and form take on a softly radiant quality. All my landscapes have been sketched on location at various sites in California, as well as New Orleans and Connecticut. My landscapes have a dreamlike mood and are taken a step further in sensuously swirling abstract works. Also, among my works are modulars combining several pieces. Some reflect the rich textures and hues of nature, while others evoke more transcendent concepts such as angels-fallen and otherwise.

Regardless of subject, symbolism creates layers of meaning. My goal with buildings, for example, is to imbue them with personality. This lends a certain mystery to them that I enjoy creating as well.
